Compelling Whispers from the River

I walked through the streets tonight
Listening to the river’s whispers
Over the roar of highway wheels
Echoing from the city’s face
They were silent as night breezes
Promising in a soothing voice
A steady flow that never ceases
To take away trace by trace
Bits of life which memory steals
And assuage feet consumed in blisters
By wanderlust’s compelling light

The whispers offer up the choice
To leave the banks on steady flow
And carry one to surprising places
By ways of an ancient moving highway
That changes course as it sweeps along
Yet maintains it's lasting destination
It weaves you in the alluring song
Reaching far beyond the distant bay
Slowly and surely, the Heart--it changes
Knowing truths whom few could know
Victories it cannot rejoice
